My mission is to disciple the children of the world, revealing the heart of the Father to the unfathered by demonstrating practical love and teaching life through Holy Spirit.
To make disciples of all nations!
Mozambique is located on the South East coast of Africa next to Zimbabwe, below Tanzania. Besides playing home to beautiful beaches along the Indian Ocean it is also one of the poorest countries in the world with per capita income below that of Bangladesh, Ghana or Uganda.
My name is Ed and MakeAfrica.org is just how send news back to Loma Rica Community Church and the people who support me around the world.
After several visits to Africa, I've decided to move to Mozambique to work with kids at an Iris Ministries Children's Center.
After a few weeks of getting tools, ladders and people our satellite is working. This is the equivalent of “I’ll have it done tomorrow morning” in the states!
Pemba is hot and sticky with plenty of mosquitos in the evening but everyday I have more reasons to love it here. Most of you will have heard that I’m now dating Rosa, one of our worship leaders and house mom’s here who I’ve known for a bit more than a year. We have the support of the leadership here, the kids and the staff as well. Moreover my relationship with Rosa has opened lots of doors with the younger girls who can otherwise be very very shy. So I’m enjoying loving all of our kids. I have boys who tag along most places and girls who try to get me involved in glitter fights.
I’m making good connections with our teenage boys as well, mostly because of music, and homework help. I’m now in charge of our biblioteca, our library. Our library is unique in that it doesn’t really have books at the moment, just a few cupboards with craft supplies. It’s a meager start but at least I have two helpers, Olivia and Ancha. Olivia teaches a preschool of sorts every morning. Ancha doesn’t read or write yet but she is well respected by the kids and has lots of potential for leadership. Every afternoon we have 2 hours of drawing time for a rotation of each of the dorms. It’s a great way to meet kids, learn names and make friends.
There’s no book store in our province, probably not for hundreds of miles, so I’ve started making connections in Maputo, Brazil and the US to get materials to fill our building. I’ve also started some sketches of what I think a new library might look like. After we finish our library and a gymnasium the government will let us open a secondary school on our base which would be very exciting.
I work with amazing and wonderful people every day and I love them quite a lot. Discipleship has grown in leaps and bounds since I left last. One of the last things I got to do before leaving was host a meeting to discuss discipleship strategies for Pemba. My friend Antoinette has started a midweek group that is thriving.
There’s lots more to write and lots of pictures but it’s currently just past 10pm and it’s an early morning so I need to go. I actually started writing this 4 days ago but haven’t had a chance to edit, add or include pictures…so I’m sending this “as is” because I don’t expect to have much time for about another week and after that all bets are off!
Miss you all lots! Blessings and hopefully pictures coming soon!!
I had a lovely lunch in London with my dear friend Hannah. Thanks!!! You’re wonderful! Now off the the airport for another 11 hour flight My Fav . . .
I really appreciate all your prayers, your love and your investment in my life. From here it’s 11 hours to London for lunch, and then 11 hours to Johannesburg South Africa, 2 nights there and into Pemba on the 22nd. They’re currently 10 hours ahead of us I will miss you all (but especially YOU). . . .
I first visited Africa in 2000 when our ship had an unscheduled stop in Djibouti to refuel. At the time the country was nearing the end of a civil war and it was the poorest place I had ever been. I wrote in my journal that night that I wanted to return for at least . . .
Note: This is an archived article from an earlier trip Today is my last full day here in Pemba. Tomorrow I leave for Jo’burg, South Africa. My camera is broken again and I’m leaving this MacBook here in Africa as they are hard to come by, so I probably won’t write again before I get . . .
Note: This is an archived article from an earlier trip Here’s some writing from Nasimo about the significance of prayer for Pemba. He’s currently in an english class so this is good practice for him! In the City of Pemba, my town where I live, there is a big church called Iris. At Iris there . . .
Note: This is an archived article from an earlier trip A special thanks to the Woods’ for letting me use their house while they’re gone. I’ve been keeping the house ready for guests all the time and they seem to show up pretty often. I’ve been baking, and hosting friends. I keep the tea box . . .
Note: This is an archived article from an earlier trip I’ve never really told you what it’s like to run a church service here but I was just realizing how although it is unconventional it just seems normal to me now. For starters you should know that everyone left town, including the pastor. They’re out . . .
A gift from my dear friend Cha . . .
Note: This is an archived article from an earlier trip It’s my last week in Pemba. I’ve moved from student housing into Brian & Lorena’s house while they’re on extended outreach. My days are slower now- I’ve been eating dinner with the young kids a lot. I cleaned up the front room of the house . . .

Hi Ed. Great article. I can almost “hear” you speaking. Is there anything I can do about the “book” situtation. Being a constant reader whose reading habit was started by my mom reading to me each night, I really feel books are an asset any child should not be without. God bless

Happy Passover, Eddie! Today is a day to contemplate the endurance of God’s people. So look back at our history and see… that you are making history. We love you, Ed!
